Patricia Sullivan, “Upcycled Reimagined Gemstone Object No. 1”, upcycled fibrous material, thread, Plexi, digital drawing on archival paper, 5.75 x 2.125 x .75 in.

Opening this Saturday afternoon, the Woodmere Art Museum located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania opens its 81st Annual Juried Exhibition of works from fifty-four selected Philadelphia artists. Juried by Doug Bucci, artist/jeweler extraordinaire and Temple University Assistant Professor of Metals/Jewelry and CAD-CAM, Bucci invited artists to submit work that explores novel and infinite ideas and methods of connection.

Among the 54 different pieces selected for the 81st Annual is my Upcycled Reimagined Gemstone Object No. 1, a one-of-a-kind brooch handmade from mostly reclaimed materials and a plexiglass-set digital drawing on archival paper. I’m quite pleased to be included with other notable jewelers in this exhibition, such as artists/educators Emily Cobb and Mallory Weston. Bucci chose a diversity of art mediums, not just from the jewelry realm but sculpture, oil painting, photography, mixed media, 3-D printed works plus more experimental/interdisciplinary artworks.

Harry Bertoia: “Free Interpretation of Plant Forms,” bronze welded copper tubing, 1967. On-view currently at Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia on long-term loan.

The 81st Annual Juried Exhibition runs from June 3rd through August 27th at the Woodmere Art Museum, located at 9201 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Opening reception Saturday, June 3rd from 12:00-3:00PM. Regular museum hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 10AM-5PM, with Saturdays open until 6PM. An online digital catalog of the exhibit will be available after the exhibit opens to the public on the Woodmere Art Museum’s website. Be on the lookout on artdoesmatter for more highlights from this weekend’s opening and selected commentary/my own reactions to some of the various artists’ pieces viewed in-person at the reception.
